Christmas Show Report

Show Report

The day started by lulling us into a sense of false security. The sun was shining and wind moderate. Then came the downpour accompanied by a cold northerly wind. By this time some brave, hardy competitors were “warming up” in atrocious conditions. The weather looked set for the day, so to avoid multiple cases of equine and human pneumonia we decided to allow each competitor to have a few minutes in the indoor school followed by their test. However the Gods smiled on Isis, the sun came out and although it remained bitterly cold it was thankfully dry for the rest of the day. Following numerous anxious phone calls enquiring whether the show would go on, not a single person was defeated by the meteorological conditions! Congratulations to you all!

Jessica Shopland from Boomerang riding a lovely pony won the restricted section in class 1 by a considerable margin with Isis members Alison Rivers and her attractive Tango placing second and Gill Howells third, while Jill Smith picked up the first of several rosettes she and Miss Marple acquired during the day.

Well done Sarah Howard in class two, riding her own Lochinvar to take first place, hotly contested by Vicky Randell with Solomon Grundy, beating Karen Whenmouth with Lady Grey into third place and Lindsay Stribling with The Proper Charlie fourth. In the open section Sammy Jeanes riding her cracking little pony stallion Crendon’s Frivolous Heir took first place and received a rosette for the best fancy dress in that class. Sammy Jeans and her delightful pony also won class four.

Special congratulations to Sheena Grieirson who throughout the day stoically rode seven tests on four different horses, winning two classes on Coustou and Windrushweirs Celosia.

High spot of the day was the large freestyle training class with a number of competitors riding in fancy dress and several producing seasonal music especially for the occasion. Sheena and Anne Luce’s stunning Windrushweirs Celosia won with the day’s highest score, 75.83%, while second-placed Father Christmas Sammy Jeanes with her 13.2hh pony caparisoned in red and gold took the prize for the best fancy dress – they looked stunning. Mention must also be made of Irish colleen Angie Handley in her big green mushroom hat riding her Irish horse to an enchanting Irish folk medley, and of Sue Kennedy, a dramatic wizard, with blue lights flashing in Joe’s mane.

True to tradition, Hala Bentley supplied copious amounts of mulled wine and mince pies to keep every one going in spite of the inclement conditions and especially to keep the stewards in a thawed state.

Heartfelt thanks to Sue Howard, our amazing judge, who coped with tests at five different levels during the day, to writers Denise Small and Dorothy Maundrell, and to stewards Patsy Canton and Murray Harding who endured the cold with true grit.
