Crown Farm Show Report

Show Report

As in previous years, Crown Farm proved to be a very popular venue for our Spring Show and we were forced to put some riders on a waiting list even before the entries closed. However, a few late withdrawals, and some careful juggling, ensured we were able to fit the majority in. It was good to see that the introduction of the Member’s Priority booking period ensured that all Isis members got a place and it was only those that left it to the last minute who were disappointed.

We were extremely fortunate to have wonderful weather for the show, dry and sunny, which made a long day very enjoyable for all concerned. The first trailer rolled down the drive at Crown Farm shortly after 7.30am and the final lorry departed around 7pm! In all, we fitted in 74 tests, due to the hard-working, efficient stewards who kept riders coming down at regular intervals from the outdoor warm-up arena.

Local judge, Lynne Kerrison, took on Class 1 with quite a mix of equine shapes and sizes - including ex-racehorses, chunky cobs and small ponies with an equally wide range of experience. Winner of the class was Fiona Shickle, with Run the Gauntlet, her good-looking, 9year old dark bay gelding. Close on her heels was junior rider, Freya Swan, with her neat chestnut pony Star. On the same mark, 60%, but with lower collectives, Isis member Lauren Basson came in 3rd place – a fantastic achievement for her first dressage test on the handsome grey, Orbital Express. Lauren was not the only rider making her dressage debut so well done to all riders who completed their first tests at this show!

Class 2, prelim 13, with 19 riders, was the biggest class of the day, ably judged by Hilary Simcox from Warwickshire. In first place was Crown Farm livery, Charlie Bamber, with his 18’2” heavyweight gelding Pie on a creditable 65.42%. However, Isis member Sheena Grierson on the ex-racehorse, Coustou, did a super test to gain 2nd place with 64.58%. Third place was taken by another Crown Farm livery, junior rider Camille Smith on the charming pony Cashman with 63.33%.

The two novice classes started just before 1pm and local judge and competitor Maggie Copus kindly agreed to judge them both. The only junior rider in the class, Clare Newstead, produced a very polished test to win Class 3 with 70.80% on her piebald mare Ellare Flare Molly. Close behind, but just missing the top slot, was Sarah Howard on her dark bay gelding Lochinvar, achieving 69.20%. Three riders then tied for 3rd place, all with 67.20%. They were: Lizzie Page with the her Irish skewbald mare Roo, new member Caterina Eriksson on the chestnut Braveheart and another Crown Farm resident Laura Browne with Bonita. In Class 4, 1st place was taken by seasoned competition rider Sally-Anne Barton with Blakes Thicket gaining 72.17% - the highest mark of the day. Sarah Howard was again left to take 2nd place with Lochinvar and Clare Newstead and Laura Browne this time tied for 3rd place both gaining 67.39%.

List 3 judge Carol Hogg undertook the final two classes of the day – the combined percentage classes at the higher levels. These classes attracted plenty of entries and it is good to know that Isis now has a strong contingent of riders choosing to compete at elementary and above. In Class 5, the combined elementary 42 / medium 63, Pam Walker and Thompson earned 67.41% in the medium test to be placed 1st, hotly pursued by Sheena Grierson, also riding the medium, who took 2nd place on I’m Clever Cloggs with 64.83%. Close behind, however, were Sally-Anne Barton and Blakes Thicket, gaining 64.38% in the elementary. The last class of the day was also taken by Pam and the consistent Thompson, this time riding the elementary, with a score of 69.20%. Sheena Grierson had to be content with a 2nd place on Legal Light in the elementary and 3rd place on I’m Clever Cloggs, riding the advanced medium test, with an excellent mark of 66.36%.

It was good to see so many members and non-members competing at Crown Farm and hopefully many will enjoy viewing their photos on SF Digital’s website as the photographer was in attendance all day. In addition, Kookaburra Coffee kept us supplied with excellent cappuccinos, teas and hot chocolates plus delicious cakes and sandwiches. Our thanks go, as ever, to Chris and Janet Badger for allowing Isis to use their excellent facilities for our show again this year. A lot of willing helpers made the day go smoothly and our thanks go to Caroline Ogden, Pam Walker, Hala Bentley and her friend Richard, Penny Gill, Anne Luce, Karen Rawlins and Jane Higgins. In addition three Crown Farm liveries wrote for the judges namely Maggie Jackman, Diane Robinson and Sammy Wirdnam. Finally, thank you to all four judges – Carol Hogg, Hilary Simcox, Maggie Copus and Lynne Kerrison for giving up their time to come and support our show.
